Pierre Gasly addresses F1 future with impending Esteban Ocon Alpine exit confirmed

With Esteban Ocon’s Alpine departure confirmed for the end of the season, all eyes have turned to his teammate Pierre Gasly regarding the future of the second Frenchman on the team. During the drivers’ press conference ahead of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, Gasly addressed his future with some carefully chosen words.

Alpine has only made one thing clear during this early-onset silly season: Esteban Ocon is out. His teammate Pierre Gasly is also reaching the end of his contract, but the driver has addressed concerns about his future by saying: “At the minute it’s quite clear the position I’m in. For my future at the moment, I have nothing really to announce. You guys will know in due time.”

Gasly and Ocon: Uncomfortable Alpine teammates

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, who have a childhood karting rivalry, reluctantly teamed up at Alpine. This happened when Gasly joined the French team before the 2023 season. Since then, they have had several clashes on the track, with the latest incident occurring at the Monaco Grand Prix.

On the initial lap of the race, Ocon made a daring attempt to overtake on the inside of the Portier corner. The outcome was catastrophic as the cars crashed into each other, causing Ocon’s car to catapult over Gasly’s vehicle.

Gasly, despite challenges, continued the race to rank 10th, earning his first point of 2024. On the other hand, Ocon was not as lucky. He had to retire from the race due to the damage he suffered and was penalized with a 10-second penalty.

During the pre-race press conference, Gasly was asked about his relationship with his teammate and took his time carefully selecting his words.

There’s quite a history between Esteban and myself. Over the past year and a half, we’ve been able to work and cooperate in a very professional manner. It’s crucial to point out that this hasn’t always been a simple task, considering we’re both highly competitive drivers,” he expressed.

“However, reflecting on our shared history, I believe it’s been positive.”

Gasly easily dismissed inquiries about his future and Ocon. On being questioned about when an announcement could be expected, Gasly responded, “I don’t have a specific deadline, and I believe the market is currently quite open.”

Everyone is already aware of the available opportunities, so I don’t feel the need to delve into specifics at this time. I believe that the ongoing discussions are progressing smoothly, and that’s all there is to it.

However, Gasly also conceded that Alpine is still lagging behind as they approach the Canadian Grand Prix.

“Currently, our primary focus is on optimising what we have,” said Gasly. “However, we are also reconsidering our methods of approaching these concepts.”

“We’re striving to give our best. We’re aware that we’re battling for a spot, specifically at the tail end of the top 10. However, we remain optimistic that we can mimic our performance from Monaco.”
