Ever-evolving Augustine embraces big moments, growth experiences
Last season, as a freshman, the Red Wings goalie prospect assisted Michigan State in securing the BIG Ten title.
DETROIT – It was an unforgettable past calendar year for Detroit Red Wings goalie prospect Trey Augustine.
Augustine was drafted No. 41 overall by the Red Wings in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The following year, he helped the United States win gold at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden. At 19 years old, he finished his freshman year at Michigan State University and then participated in the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia, where he sought to learn as much as he could.
“During last month’s Red Wings’ 2024 Development Camp, Augustine reflected on his journey, saying, “I’ve been presented with some incredibly remarkable opportunities. I’m deeply grateful to all those who’ve assisted me in reaching where I am today. I’m excited and eager for more intriguing opportunities in the future.”

During the 2023-24 season, Augustine stood out as the youngest starting goaltender in NCAA Division 1 hockey. He posted a 23-9-2 record in 35 games with a 2.96 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and three shutouts.
“Augustine instills in me a great deal of confidence, even though I’m not a part of his team,” stated Dan Cleary, the Assistant Director of Player Development for the Red Wings. He further added, “Augustine possesses a commendable demeanor. He’s calm and composed, yet harbors a fierce competitive spirit within him.”
Augustine found it an incredible experience to aid the Spartans in securing their first-ever BIG Ten title. His return to Michigan State’s campus comes with a deeper insight into what it takes to achieve success at the collegiate level.
“Winning every night is a challenge,” stated Augustine. “Approaching every game with the correct mindset is crucial – no team will back down, particularly given our successful year. We’ll have a target on our backs for the upcoming year.”

Augustine also mentioned that he gained a lot of knowledge while playing with the U.S. men’s Worlds team.
“Being able to go over there and mingle with numerous professional players was an extraordinary opportunity for me,” said Augustine. “I really cherished the moment, listening to their advice and absorbing as much as I could. Observing how those individuals prepare themselves every day while being part of a team like that was extremely unique and exciting.”
While representing the Red Wings organization at Worlds, Alex Lyon mentored Augustine as part of the goaltending pair.
“Alex is an exceptional individual who imparted a lot of knowledge to me during his time with us,” commented Augustine. “Observing his level of preparation and the seriousness he brings, even on match days, is a stark contrast to what I’ve experienced with previous team members.”
Augustine, who aspires to model his game after Sergei Bobrovsky, the Florida Panthers netminder, has ambitions of making a name for himself in the NHL. As he relentlessly pursues his ultimate goal, his mature approach distinguishes him from others, especially being a native of South Lyon, Michigan.
“Augustine’s maturity and attention to small details around the rink are impressive, especially considering his young age,” said Red Savage, a fellow Red Wings prospect and teammate at Michigan State. “I often forget that he’s merely 19 and I’m two years his senior.”
