Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed as though Verstappen might secure pole position after gaining a few more tenths in his final run. However, Norris pulled off a 1:11.383, outperforming Verstappen by a mere 0.02s to claim the pole position for himself.

Lewis Hamilton has outqualified George Russell for only the second time this season, securing an all-Mercedes second row. On row three, Charles Leclerc is ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local favorite, Carlos Sainz.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Sergio Perez is set to spearhead the attempt to breach the top 10 and secure points-paying positions. This comes after the enforcement of his three-place grid penalty from Canada, with Valtteri Bottas from Sauber joining him on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s teammate from Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row. They will be ahead of Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

In the all-RB ninth row, Yuki Tsunoda is leading Daniel Ricciardo. The back row of the Spanish Grand Prix will essentially be occupied by Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant from Williams. Albon was sent back to the pit lane after the team decided to swap his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
