13 basketball legends with statues at NBA arenas

Kobe Bryant is the seventh icon from the Lakers to be honored with a statue.

On Feb. 8, 2024, the Los Angeles Lakers honored their late superstar, Kobe Bryant, by unveiling a 19-foot bronze statue of him outside their downtown arena.

The statue, weighing 4,000 pounds, represents Bryant wearing his white jersey with the number 8, his right index finger raised in the air, capturing the moment when he walked off the court after scoring 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in January 2006.

At the dedication ceremony, Vanessa Bryant, the widow of Bryant, announced that this statue is the first of three that will be erected to honour the five-time NBA champion and the highest scorer in Lakers history. A second statue will portray Bryant in his No. 24 jersey, donned during the latter half of his career, and a third will feature Bryant alongside his daughter, Gianna. Tragically, Bryant and Gianna, along with seven others, lost their lives in a helicopter crash in January 2020.
