Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

Verstappen seemed to have the pole position secured after gaining a few more tenths in his final run. However, Norris managed to beat Verstappen’s time by a mere 0.02s, clocking in at 1:11.383, and secured the pole position for himself.

The second row will be exclusively Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton outqualifying George Russell for only the second time this season. On row three, Charles Leclerc will be ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local hero, Carlos Sainz.

The top 10 of the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Following his three-place grid penalty from Canada, Sergio Perez is set to spearhead the effort to crack the top 10 and earn points. He will be accompanied by Valtteri Bottas of Sauber on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg of Haas and Lance Stroll, who is Alonso’s team-mate at Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row, followed by Zhou Guanyu driving the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from the Haas team.

In an all-RB line-up, Yuki Tsunoda leads Daniel Ricciardo for the ninth row. Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant from Williams will essentially make up the last row for the Spanish Grand Prix. Albon was demoted to the pit lane after his team decided to replace his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
