Ty Majeski's Runner-Up Finish in ASA STARS National Tour Event at Milwaukee Disallowed
Four days ago, Ty Majeski scored a runner-up finish in a hard-fought battle with Dawson Sutton in the ASA STARS National Tour Father's Day 100 at the Milwaukee Mile. Fast forward to the following Thursday, and Majeski and the No. 91 Gearheadz Motorsports team have had that finish stripped due to an illegal engine.
The penalties assessed to the No. 91 driver and team on Thursday included disqualification from the race. The car owner and driver have been stripped of the second-place points totals, and have instead been awarded last-place points, and five appearance points. The team owner and driver also lose all bonus and segment points earned and all earnings from the race have been wiped out.
Additionally, the No. 91 Gearheadz Motorsports team will be placed on probation for all events in the remainder of the Calendar Year.
According to a statement from the ASA STARS National Tour, Majeski's engine was found to be out of compliance with the ASA STARS National Tour rulebook, and the "Sealed Engine Alliance Leaders" (S.E.A.L.) specifications.
As is customary, the top two finishing cars, in this case, Sutton and Majeski, had their engines impounded and taken to RW Race Engines in Tennessee for an additional round of technical inspections by S.E.A.L., which were overseen by representatives from both team's engine builders, and ASA STARS officials.
According to ASA STARS, the race-winning No. 26 Rackley W.A.R. team's engine passed inspection and was declared officially legal as that engine passed the baseline testing involving compression, engine displacement, and horsepower.
The No. 91 Gearheadz on the other hand, did not pass the baseline testing. The statement from ASA STARS states that the specific violation for Majeski's engine was related to the maximum allowable compression ratio.
The No. 91 Gearheadz Motorsports team issued a statement following Thursday's penalties.
"At the completion of the Father's Day 100 at The Milwaukee Mile the sealed engine from our 91 was pulled and taken to an independent engine builder for inspection," the statement read. "At that time, it was discovered that our engine was not within compression technical specifications."
The statement goes on to say that the issue with the engine was a mistake made by a separate entity from the Gearheadz Motorsports team, which was hired to rebuild the engine that the team used to win in the Snowball Derby.
"The engine that was in our car for The Milwaukee Mile was a sealed engine from McGunegill Engine Performance. This is the same engine that was in the car when we won the Snowball Derby. After the Derby MEP took the engine to be rebuilt. We have been in communication with Dewaine from MEP and he has taken full responsibility for the miscalculation during the rebuild process that has led to the infraction."
The team emphasized that the car and engine used at Milwaukee were not the same car and engine used at Madison earlier in the weekend.
"The car/engine that we raced at Milwaukee was different than the car/engine that we raced at Madison on Friday night," said the team. "We are disappointed in the finding, however, we will move forward as a team and come back stronger. Out next Super Late Model schedule race is the Slinger Nationals July 9th."
