VIDEO: Dramatic Finish Decides 11th Vores Cup at Angola Motorsports Speedway
The Vores Cup at Angola Motorsport Speedway is always one of the biggest races of the season for the Vores Compact Touring Series. This year, it might have produced the series' best finish of the year.
Kyle Stark had won three of the last four Vores Compact Touring Series events at Angola entering Saturday night, with only his son's win in the 2021 Vores Cup preventing a sweep.
To add another Vores Cup to the trophy cabinet, Stark had to battle a driver hungry for his first career Vores Compact Touring Series win, Aaron Tatman. The two drivers traded paint over the final laps in a thrilling finish. Waiting in the wings was Kyle Frame, if the two drivers misstepped while battling for the top spot.
Stark gained inside position on Tatman coming to the white flag and muscled his way to the lead as they approached a lapped car. Tatman took one last shot going into turn three, but Stark held on for the win.
The dramatic finish left both drivers raving about the quality of racing and the battle for the win.
"You can't get any more close, hard racing than that," said Stark. "I'm sure we both tried to run each other the best we can, but we're both running for this race.
"He's not dumb. He knows what he's got to do around this track. I was waiting for him to slip up, but he was holding it down pretty good. Just tried to get it done."
While Tatman was surely disappointed to finish second, he held his head high and tipped his cap to Kyle Stark.
"I gave it my all," said Tatman. "I was sure hoping to get my first feature win here at Angola and get my name on that trophy next to the Stark boys. Just slipped up too much a few corners, and he made the move. He was there to capitalize. Congrats to him. He's a hell of a competitor. I knew him and his boy would be tough competition today."
Kyle Frame was in the mix for the win in the closing laps, but ultimately never had an opportunity to squeeze past the two front runners.
“We’ve had a rough year, so I didn’t want to tear something up, because it looked like they were getting ready to," said Frame. "Fast car, just nowhere to go.”
Tom Gossar finished fourth, while Karter Stark rounded out the top five.
