SAN JUAN (AP) — Former NBA All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins joined the Guaynabo Mets of Puerto Rico’s professional basketball league on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Guaynabo Mets confirmed that 32-year-old free agent Cousins still possesses the skills required to play in the NBA. However, he has decided to bring his talents to Puerto Rico, a place known for its basketball enthusiasm. The specifics of the contract were not immediately disclosed.
“DeMarcus is among the top basketball players of his era, and in terms of talent, he will be among the greatest to ever play” in the Puerto Rican league, according to Marc Grossman, the co-owner of the Mets. “His shooting skills and his ability to expand the playing area should be an excellent match,” he added.
Cousins, who was the fifth pick in the 2010 NBA draft, last played for the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021-22 season. His career also includes periods with the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Clippers.
During his NBA career, Cousins, a former college basketball player at Kentucky, averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
In recent years, several former NBA players have been brought in by Puerto Rico’s league, Baloncesto Superior Nacional.
