Andersen Helps Denmark Clinch Olympic Berth
The goaltender started all three games for his native country.
RALEIGH, NC. – Denmark has locked in its spot in the 2026 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament, thanks in part to Carolina Hurricanes netminder Frederik Andersen.
In the Group F qualifying tournament, “Freddie” participated and emerged victorious in all three games. He successfully stopped 60 out of 64 shots in the wins against Great Britain, Japan, and Norway.
Following their respective qualifying tournament victories over the weekend, Denmark, Latvia, and Slovakia have secured their spots in the Olympics in Italy. This means that 11 out of the 12 teams are now set. Canada, Finland, United States, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and Czechia had already secured their spots previously due to their high standings in the 2023 IIHF World Rankings.
The decision on Russia’s participation is expected to be made by the IIHF in February.
As for Andersen in Raleigh, he is entering the second year of a two-year contract signed in July 2023. The 2024-25 season will be his fourth as a Hurricane, and through three campaigns he’s produced a record of 69-27-4 with a .918 save percentage.
Slovakia, Denmark and Latvia are heading to the 2026 Olympic Games in Milano Cortina.
