LAS VEGAS — Jakub Demek has checked off one of the last boxes on his to-do list before reaching the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Requiring players who have turned professional to participate in one more development camp after completing their first full season is a significant part of their mantra.

The 21-year-old forward prospect, a fourth-round pick (No. 128) in the 2021 NHL Draft, accomplished this feat last month. The young player, Demek, undertook a leadership role during camp, dedicating his time to guide younger players as requested by Vegas from its seasoned players.

“As a young man, I relied on others to guide me in understanding how things functioned here,” said Demek. “I’m attempting to be of assistance, just like the mature men who aided me.”

“During your final developmental camp, you encounter the last phase of development, which is leadership,” said Wil Nichol, Golden Knights director of player development. “This is a significant aspect of development as you continue to pass on the culture.”

In his first professional season with the American Hockey League’s Henderson, Demek earned 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) over 55 games. Despite a brief call-up to Vegas on Feb. 23, he didn’t make his NHL debut.

He expressed his appreciation for the practice experience with the Golden Knights and expects another opportunity to come his way.

“Seeing my dream come true was an invaluable lesson,” said Demek. “I hope to experience it once more.”

Demek stated that, as with many young players, he is striving to increase his speed, strength, and size. Additionally, he is attempting to discern how to position himself optimally and comprehend professional systems.

“Coming from junior, the focus is mainly on skill and speed,” Demek stated, who scored 65 points (24 goals, 41 assists) in 70 games over two seasons with Edmonton and Kamloops of the Western Hockey League from 2021-23. “At the professional level, everyone is highly skilled, incredibly fast, and strong. Scoring and accumulating points become more challenging. However, with experience, it progressively becomes easier.”

Demek stated that his summer workout routine hasn’t altered significantly, consisting mainly of skill training, weight lifting, and healthy eating. His aim is to develop into a well-rounded 200-foot player, a requirement for forwards upon their invitation to the NHL.

“He said, ‘We’re attempting to concentrate on a different aspect of the game. Additionally, I’m scrutinizing my own performance. I’m striving to enhance my skills by working on all aspects of the game.'”
