Julian Champagnie poured in 20 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 76-68 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA 2K24 Summer League on Friday at Thomas and Mack Center.
No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama had an underwhelming debut offensively, finishing with nine points on 2-for-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds. While Wembanyama struggled from the field, he showed off his impressive passing vision en route to three assists. On the defensive end, Wembanyama swatted five shots in 27 minutes of action.
The Spurs led 15-12 after one quarter and created separation in the second to carry a 12-point advantage into the break. The Hornets brought a more committed effort in the third, yet could not cut into the deficit and trailed by 13 entering the final frame. The Hornets continued the fight in the fourth, but the Spurs kept pace to maintain control and close out the win.
Champagnie also tallied eight rebounds, six assists and a block to go with his game-high 20 points in 30 minutes of action. Malaki Branham followed up with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal, while Blake Wesley recorded 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Dominick Barlow also stuffed the stat sheet for the Spurs with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a block.
Meanwhile, No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller led the Hornets with 16 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and a block in 31 minutes of action. Bryce McGowens followed up with 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting, while 2020 first-rounder James Bouknight totaled 14 points, nine rebounds, a steal and a block.
The Hornets will look to bounce back as they take on the Lakers on Sunday. The Spurs clash with the Trail Blazers on Sunday.
