Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

Verstappen seemed to secure the pole position after shaving a few more tenths off his final run, but Norris had a stunning performance, delivering a 1:11.383 time, which was a mere 0.02s faster than Verstappen’s, allowing him to snatch the pole position for himself.

The second row will be exclusively Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton outperforming George Russell for only the second time this season. Charles Leclerc will be ahead of Ferrari teammate and local favorite Carlos Sainz on the third row.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Following his three-place grid penalty issued in Canada, Sergio Perez is set to lead the effort to break into the top 10 and secure points-paying positions. Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas will be alongside him on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s team-mate from Aston Martin, will be in the seventh row, followed by Zhou Guanyu in the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

In the all-RB ninth row, Yuki Tsunoda is leading Daniel Ricciardo. Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant, both from Williams, will essentially make up the last row in the Spanish Grand Prix. After the team decided to replace his Energy Store and Control Electronics, Albon was relegated to the pit lane.
