Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed as though Verstappen might secure the pole after making a few tenths more in his final run. However, Norris outperformed him by clocking 1:11.383, just 0.02s faster, thereby seizing the pole for himself.

Lewis Hamilton outqualified George Russell for only the second time this season, making it an all-Mercedes second row. Charles Leclerc, ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local hero Carlos Sainz, will be on the third row.

The top 10 of the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Sergio Perez will spearhead the effort to crack the top 10 and earn points. This comes after his three-place grid penalty imposed in Canada. He will be joined by Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, the Aston Martin team-mate of Alonso, will make up the seventh row. They will be ahead of Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

Yuki Tsunoda is leading Daniel Ricciardo in the all-RB row nine. Alex Albon from Williams and Logan Sargeant will essentially constitute the back row for the Spanish Grand Prix. Albon was moved to the pit lane after the team decided to replace his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
