Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed as though Verstappen might have secured the pole after gaining a few more tenths in his final run. However, Norris surpassed him by delivering a 1:11.383, beating Verstappen’s time by a mere 0.02s, and thus snatching the pole for himself.

The second row will be entirely occupied by Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton outperforming George Russell for only the second time this season. On the third row, Charles Leclerc is in front of his Ferrari team-mate and local favorite, Carlos Sainz.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s team-mate from Aston Martin, will occupy the seventh row. They will be followed by Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

In the all-RB ninth row, Yuki Tsunoda leads Daniel Ricciardo, with Williams’ Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant forming the rear row for the Spanish Grand Prix. After the team decided to switch his Energy Store and Control Electronics, Albon moved to the pit lane.
