Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed as though Verstappen might have secured pole position after gaining a few more tenths in his final run. However, Norris came through with a 1:11.383, narrowly beating Verstappen by just 0.02s to claim the pole for himself.

Lewis Hamilton will outqualify George Russell for only the second time this season, resulting in an all-Mercedes second row. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc will be ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local favorite, Carlos Sainz, on the third row.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s team-mate from Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row. They will be ahead of Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber team and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

Yuki Tsunoda leads Daniel Ricciardo in the all-RB row nine, with Williams’ Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant essentially making up the back row for the Spanish Grand Prix. Albon was demoted to the pit lane after his team decided to replace his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
