Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

Following his final run, it appeared that Verstappen might secure the pole position after shaving off a few more tenths. However, Norris came through with a 1:11.383, outperforming Verstappen by a slim 0.02s and securing the pole position for himself.

The second row will be exclusively occupied by Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton qualifying ahead of George Russell for only the second time this season. Charles Leclerc will start ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local favorite, Carlos Sainz, in the third row.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, who is Alonso’s team-mate from Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row. They are ahead of Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber team and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

In an entirely Red Bull dominated ninth row, Yuki Tsunoda leads Daniel Ricciardo, while Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant from Williams effectively make up the last row for the Spanish Grand Prix. Albon was relegated to the pit lane after the team decided to switch his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
