Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed that Verstappen might have secured pole position after shaving off a few more tenths of a second in his final run, but Norris outdid him by delivering a 1:11.383, surpassing Verstappen by a mere 0.02s and claiming pole for himself.

Lewis Hamilton outqualified George Russell for only the second time this season, solidifying an all-Mercedes second row. On the third row, Charles Leclerc outperformed his Ferrari team-mate and local favourite, Carlos Sainz.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Following his three-place grid penalty from Canada, Sergio Perez is set to try to break into the top 10 and earn points-paying positions, with Valtteri Bottas of Sauber joining him on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s teammate from Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row. They will be ahead of Zhou Guanyu from the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

The ninth row at the Spanish Grand Prix is entirely composed of RBs, featuring Yuki Tsunoda in front of Daniel Ricciardo. Meanwhile, Alex Albon from Williams and Logan Sargeant will essentially make up the last row. Albon was relegated to the pit lane after his team decided to replace his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
