Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya main straight.

Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen to pole for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix in a thrilling qualifying battle.

With Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Norris joined by the Ferrari and Mercedes duos seemingly in the battle for pole, it was Verstappen and Norris who emerged from this pack as Norris secured that P1 grid slot for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris snatches Spanish GP pole from Max Verstappen

It seemed as though Verstappen might secure the pole after finding a few more tenths in his final run. However, Norris outdid him by just 0.02s with a 1:11.383, stealing the pole for himself.

The second row will be entirely occupied by Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton qualifying ahead of George Russell for only the second time this season. Charles Leclerc, who is ahead of his Ferrari team-mate and local favourite Carlos Sainz, will be on the third row.

The top 10 for the Spanish Grand Prix grid is completed by Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Oscar Piastri, and Fernando Alonso.

Following his three-place grid penalty from Canada, Sergio Perez will spearhead the effort to break into the top 10 and earn points. Valtteri Bottas of Sauber will join him on the sixth row.

Nico Hulkenberg from Haas and Lance Stroll, Alonso’s team-mate from Aston Martin, will make up the seventh row. They will be followed by Zhou Guanyu in the second Sauber and Kevin Magnussen from Haas.

Yuki Tsunoda is leading Daniel Ricciardo in the all-RB ninth row, while Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant from Williams will essentially make up the back row for the Spanish Grand Prix. Albon was relegated to the pit lane after a team decision to alter his Energy Store and Control Electronics.
