‘Maybe it can change in the future’ – Yuki Tsunoda’s warning to Sergio Perez
Since 2021, Yuki Tsunoda has been driving for the second team of Red Bull.
Denied a Red Bull promotion when the team extended Sergio Perez’s contract, Yuki Tsunoda says he’s happy to stay at RB but he wants “more commitment” from Red Bull.
Earlier this week, Red Bull declared that Perez had inked a new two-year extension, ensuring his stay with the team till the close of the 2026 season.
Yuki Tsunoda: Maybe [it] can change in the future
That effectively shut the door on Yuki Tsunoda being promoted to the senior team given Max Verstappen still has another four years to run on his deal.
However, Tsunoda’s relationship with Red Bull isn’t over yet. He claims to be “happy” with the junior team, which he joined four years ago.
However, before he signs a new deal, he does have a few requests, one of which includes the possibility of taking on a bigger role in the future. He believes that “anything can happen” with Perez.
“Tsunoda expressed his hopes to see more commitment in the contract. He stated, “Obviously, I’m significantly committed to Red Bull and I hope they can reciprocate with a bit more commitment.”
Firstly, I want to ensure that we are on the same page with Red Bull amidst the ongoing discussion. We can then decide on the next steps. However, I must say that I am content with Red Bull.
“Perez still has to perform in these two years, and in this kind of environment, anything can occur.”
“So, kudos to him. As for me, I simply continue to concentrate on my own tasks and prove my worth.”
“I simply need to continue developing. Hopefully, as I do, Red Bull will notice my progress and potential performance, which could potentially alter the future.”

However, Tsunoda isn’t limited to just RB.
The Japanese driver mentioned that, despite having previously referred to Aston Martin, who will be powered by Honda in 2026, there are “other teams” showing interest in him. This presents him with potential future opportunities.
“He revealed, “The positive aspect is that other teams are beginning to show interest in me. I’ve also received a few options from others, which are increasing.”
“I’m fortunate to be able to increase my worth, particularly in this intriguing drivers’ market.”
However, my foremost priority is Red Bull. I want to ensure we have a mutual understanding, as Red Bull has been a significant part of my life up until now. Without their support, I wouldn’t have achieved as much as I have.
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko is keen to continue with Tsunoda, saying he is “set” to stay at RB next season with Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson fighting for the second seat.
