Cody Coughlin Wins in JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour's Return to Toledo
Cody Coughlin won the HB Concerts Promenade Pavilion 100 at Toledo Speedway Friday night, giving him sole possession of first place on the all-time wins list in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour.
Coughlin took the lead on lap seven of the 100-lap event and maintained the top spot for the remainder of the event for his 12th career win on the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour. The win, Coughlin's second of the 2024 season, pulls him ahead of Brian Campbell on the series' career wins list.
"It was great," said Coughlin in victory lane. "We won the race. Can't ask for anything more, so thanks to everybody for coming out."
While Coughlin led 93 of the race's 100 laps, there were a couple of dramatic moments. The excitement began on lap 31, when flames emerged from Brian Campbell's machine as he ran in the second position to bring out the yellow flag, only for the fire to disappear shortly thereafter.
With the fire gone, Campbell attempted the ensuing restart, only to pit shortly thereafter and retire from the race due to handling issues. However, that restart also featured a multi-car incident as the inside line stacked up behind Coughlin.
Coughlin kept the lead with the second chance at the lap 31 restart, but another caution with 13 laps remaining offered Kyle Steckly and Blake Rowe a final shot at the win. The two drivers nearly found themselves three-wide on the restart, but ultimately Coughlin prevailed for the victory.
Coughlin also became the first repeat winner of the 2024 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour season. Entering Friday's event, the series saw eight different winners across six points-paying events and two non-points races.
Steckly settled for a runner-up finish, coming off a big win with the ASA STARS National Tour in the Redbud 400 at Anderson Speedway one week ago.
"It was a lot of fun there," said Steckly. "The three of us were all really fast, but Cody had a really good car. We were trying to keep up with him, for sure. Probably pushing a little too hard there in the middle portion, trying to keep up with him and see what I could because I knew he would be the car to beat. We kept up with him on the short run, but he just never really fell off."
Blake Rowe emerged with a third-place finish. While it was not a win, it was a crucial podium finish in a hard-fought championship. Chase Pinsonneault entered the event with a four-point advantage over Rowe, but finished seventh at Toledo on Friday.
"It was hectic, obviously, racing for the win there," said Rowe. "It was fun. Kyle took care of us, I appreciate that. He's a good little race car driver. I feel good about the guys we get to race with here in the JEGS Tour. I appreciate all of them.
"It's funny how these things work," Rowe continued while discussing the points battle. "When you put races together like you know you can, these things fall into place. I have no doubt we'll be in good shape for the back half of the year. All of these tracks are good places for me."
Chase Burda finished fourth, with Barrett Polhemus rounding out the top five to keep himself within shouting distance of the top two in points.
The next stop for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour will be a big one, the Masters of the Pros 185 at Owosso Speedway. That event is scheduled for next Saturday, August 3, and can be watched live on RacingAmerica.TV.
