Easy-Kleen SLMS Championship on The Line In ReCar 150
Round six is looking and feeling a whole lot like a game seven for the Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series. The ReCar 150 presented by Wonder Auto & Tire will serve as the season finale for the series – with fans being treated to an all-time great fight for the championship between the drivers who have shown the way for the entirety of the 2024 season.
A mere three (3) points separates points leader Cory Hall (#83) from second place Ashton Tucker (#2). Hall and Tucker have finished first and second in the last two Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series events at Speedway 660, while combining to win every feature event on the season. Third in points Robbie MacEwen (#40) also enters with a stellar championship chance, trailing by twenty-two (22) points.
While plenty of eyes are on the fight for the title, there is a stellar field of competitors looking to spoil the party and halt a clean sweep of race wins on the season. Twenty (20) entries are expected to battle for the $4000 grand prize and victory in the ReCar 150 presented by Wonder Auto & Tire. Action gets underway at 4pm on Saturday August 17th.

SUPER SIX Super Late Model Series Storylines
It’s Not Just A Battle, It’s An All-Out War Between Cory Hall and Ashton Tucker
Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards in NASCAR. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1. Now, it’s Cory Hall and Ashton Tucker fighting for the Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series championship in front of race fans in Atlantic Canada.
They’ve been neck and neck since the beginning. Never separated by more than seven (7) points while combining to win all five (5) races held thus far, it’s been Cory Hall (#83) and Ashton Tucker’s (#2) world in 2024.
After five events, only three (3) points separate Hall and Tucker – with Hall standing tall atop the standings for the first time all season on the heels of his Chapman Bros. 150 victory. Their season long battle finally culminates in one final race, and fans are surely in for a treat.
Many recall last year's ReCar 150 when these two drivers nearly wrecked on the final lap in a dogfight finish. It’s a full circle moment a full year later, as should that same battle play out – this time it would be for a championship.
Two drivers who started racing in Bandoleros together, all these years later will treat fans to a championship battle for the ages. Regardless of who emerges victorious, both drivers are certainly deserving, having battled hard and with respect in each and every race.
Heat Races Could Mean Everything
The heat races for the ReCar 150 presented by Wonder Auto & Tire will play a pivotal role in deciding the 2024 Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series champion.
Ten-lap qualifiers are contested at each Easy-Kleen SLMS event to set the grid for the main 150-lap events – but championship points are also awarded during these races with the winner getting ten (10) points, with awarded points decreasing by one point per position.
With every point mattering so much in a battle this close, this amplifies the intensity of heat races. Adding to the dramatics is the fact that heat race lineups are determined by a random draw. For drivers like Hall and Tucker, the outcome here could very well alter how they approach the feature.
For Tucker, he will want to gain at least one point on Hall by finishing at least one point higher. There is a 2 point per position differential between each position in feature competition, so Tucker will want to get within two points of Hall entering the feature, which will be the equivalent of one spot. On the flip side, Hall will want to ensure Tucker stays three or more points behind, which would give the #83 team the chance to clinch the title with a runner-up finish, should Tucker win the feature.
Heat races will mean so much more for this race – they will mean everything for drivers battling for the championship.
Robbie MacEwen Embracing The Spoiler Role
Robbie MacEwen (#40) could find himself making off like a thief in the night if circumstances work in his favor.
The Prince Edward Island driver enters the ReCar 150 twenty-two (22) points behind Cory Hall, and nineteen (19) points behind Ashton Tucker. It’s not a mountain to climb, but certainly is a steep hill and will require some luck to make a championship happen. But few will forget the intense Hall and Tucker battle from this very race one year ago – if a similar battle plays out and the top two end up running into issues, suddenly everything changes.
MacEwen has committed to doing whatever it takes to win – but he has acknowledged that Speedway 660 is the track his team has struggled at the most. Additionally, MacEwen is looking to keep up his top ten streak that is currently at eleven (11) races – a streak which would extend to two full seasons with a top ten run on Saturday.
No PEI driver has won a feature in 2024 – and while Dylan Gosbee (#16), Kent Vincent (#8) and Brodie Lewis (#22) all want to change that stat, Robbie MacEwen has led the charge for the island and looks to do so one final time this summer.
Messer, Sommerville, Fahey Among 660 Standouts in Battle for Fourth
The battle for fourth in standings might be just as noteworthy as the championship battle. Ironically, a trio of Speedway 660 standouts and champions are the ones battling – and they all want a big win too.
If Hall, Tucker, and MacEwen have broken out as the top three drivers in 2024, Lonnie Sommerville (#23) has made a strong case to be fourth. While he has yet to crack the podium, he has consistently finished fourth to seventh, except for a tough season opener. Looking to hold on to fourth, Sommerville also wants a podium – and maybe a big win – at the track he has had many career highlights at.
Ryan Messer (#1) has battled hard all season, with his team having a never give up attitude. It has been an uncharacteristic season for the #1 team, but they’ve shown their true character and fought hard every week to salvage every position during a year where essentially every race day has been marred with some sort of adversity. There’s no better place to finish strong than Speedway 660 – where Messer has never finished off the podium in Easy-Kleen SLMS competition. Could Big Orange bring a season defining win to the table at the end of 150 laps and spoil the party up front?
Another driver hungry to get back to Speedway 660 is Greg Fahey (#20). Remember June’s Castle Building Centres 150? Fahey led 106 laps en route to a fifth place finish in the end. That dominant run has this team wanting more. He recently won a weekly feature at Speedway 660, and is primed to not only win, but steal a top five points spot from Messer and / or Sommerville.
Super Late Model Series Debuts and SpeedWeekend Prep
A quartet of drivers will make their first Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series starts of the season on Saturday – with two making their series debuts. Headlining the list is multi-time Easy-Kleen SLMS podium finisher Steve Halpin (#03). Halpin is a feature winner from Speedway 660 earlier in the season, but hasn’t been on track in an Easy-Kleen SLMS event yet, and could be a favorite to spoil the party while also getting laps in before the upcoming Yard Gear 250!
Ed Bowlby (#15) will return to Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series competition for the first time since last year’s running of the ReCar 150 when he crossed the line 14th. He will be joined be teammate Joe Hoyt (#17) who will make his series debut after running a pair of Re/Max East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock division features. Hoyt is a multi-time Atlantic Modified Tour champion and is always a crowd favorite at Speedway 660.
Returning to the Super Late Model ranks for the first time since 2020 will be Cal Hatfield (#11). He’s a name familiar to many long time fans, having raced Modifieds, Sportsman, and Super Late Models, and will be getting laps in back behind the wheel.
Curtis Collins Wraps Up Rookie Season
Curtis Collins (#27) will wrap up what has been a very respectable rookie campaign on the Easy-Kleen SLMS Saturday night at his home track – where five years ago he reached the top of the Sportsman division. Collins had some tough luck at Oyster Bed Speedway for round five, but otherwise has run clean and consistent, hovering just outside the top 10 in every race.
Looking to finish strong, his home track bodes well to have his best run to date as he also eyes up the upcoming Yard Gear 250. With a top ten points finish within his grasp, keep an eye on driver #27!
