Larson Has Approval to Seek Indy 500 Opportunity

While there is no immediate deal in place, there are no obstacles preventing reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson from participating in the Indianapolis 500 either.

Larson, who spent much of his childhood racing Midgets and Sprint Cars across the Midwest, often in the shadow of the world’s Racing Capital, has always aspired to participate in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. However, numerous obstacles have stood in his way.

As a driver for Chip Ganassi Racing, Larson’s focus was solely on NASCAR, with a contractual cap on the number of dirt races he could participate in each season. However, his time with Hendrick Motorsports marked a shift as they immediately supported his dirt program, even sponsoring his Sprint Cars and Late Models.

Larson reciprocated that support by winning the Cup Series championship. Neither Rick Hendrick nor Jeff Gordon will obstruct his pursuit of a competitive ride for the May event in Speedway, Indiana.

“During his media availability at the Charlotte Roval on Saturday, Larson expressed his eagerness to take part. “I would love to do it”, he said. “I want to be in the best equipment possible, the best crew. I mentioned to Jeff and Rick that I would like to do it. I also did it a year ago too,” he added.

Larson stated that he allows his management team to handle any discussions or potential opportunities that may arise in the IndyCar community regarding him. He was unsure if there had been any specific advances.

“From my knowledge, I’m not sure if anyone has taken this step or not,” said Larson. “I’ve informed Jeff and Rick about my interest in pursuing this, and now it’s their responsibility to find an opportunity.”

Once again, Hendrick Motorsports showed no hesitation or reservation.

“He added, ‘Yeah, Rick didn’t want me doing it this year but said I could in the future.'”

Larson joins Kyle Busch as notable Cup Series drivers and champions actively seeking rides for next May. Busch was unable to compete in the event while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing but is now willing, able and enthusiastic about the possibility.
