Throwback Thursday – October 13
– Norfolk Speedway (VA) was the backdrop for the NASCAR Convertible Division on this date in 1957. Gwyn Staley would be the victor over Bob Welborn in the 250 lap race. Staley was fresh off a win at Langhorne Speedway just a few weeks prior. Welborn would go on to win the series championship that year seven wins and 32 top 10’s.

– In 1974 Ed Sanger won the World 100 at Eldora Speedway (OH) in the fourth running of the race. Sanger led the final 28 laps after taking the lead from Jim Patrick. Don Seaborn was second after 100 laps and Neal Sceva came home third.
THE THIRD TURN: 1974 World 100 at Eldora Speedway
– Larry Pearson won the 1984 Bobby Isaac Memorial at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC). The event was a NASCAR Busch Grand National Series event that year. Jack Ingram was second with Dale Jarrett and Tommy Houston in third and fourth. The race is still run today, but it’s a Late Model Stock event.

– Rusty Wallace got the Nashville Guitar after winning the All American 400 in 1985. Despite leading a race high 225 laps, Wallace still had to hold off Gary Balough, who led 134 laps of his own. Dick Trickle was third followed by Butch Miller and Alan Kulwicki.

Jeff Purvis won the All American 400 in 1991 at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway (TN). His epic battle ended with him outlasting Junior Hanley and Darrell Waltrip in the top three. The race saw 16 cautions and Purvis got by Jody Ridley four laps to go to gain the victory. Purvis would win again in 1992 and 1995 become the only three time winner.
THE THIRD TURN: 1991 All American 400 at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway
In 1991, Ricky Craven was untouchable on the Busch North tour and he even did it in the combo events like the one on this date at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Craven won the New England Chevy Dealers 250 over Chuck Bown and Harry Gant to attract attention from down south. Craven would head south and move up to the Cup Series in 1995.

On this date in 2013, Erik Jones won the first of his three-straight Winchester 400 rifles. Jones was driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports and led 135 laps to beat out Chase Elliott for the win. Jones would return to win the 400 again the next two seasons. In 2015, Jones won the $100,000 JEGS Triple Crown bonus for winning the RedBud 300, the Battle at Berlin 251 and the Winchester 400 in the same year.
