2021 Summer League Standouts, Day 8

A look at top performers from Las Vegas on Day 8 of Summer League:

Tre Jones, San Antonio Spurs

Game Recap: Spurs 106, Hornets 105

No player came up bigger Thursday than Tre Jones, who scored a game-high 34 points and hit the game-winning layup with one second remaining to push the Spurs past the Hornets.

Jones’ points total was the highest of any player in action Thursday, and he nearly reached a triple-double, adding nine assists and eight rebounds in just 29 minutes. The former Duke standout went 12-for-20 from the field and hit all nine of his free-throw attempts, though he did turn the ball over seven times.

The 41st overall pick in the 2020 draft, Jones saw action in 37 games for the Spurs as a rookie, averaging 2.5 points and 1.1 assists in 7.3 minutes. Near the end of the regular season, Jones saw a career-high 29 minutes against the Phoenix Suns and finished with nine points, five assists and two rebounds.

Jones also appeared in seven games for the Austin Spurs of the G League, posting 18.1 points, 9.7 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals per game.


Cam Thomas, Brooklyn Nets

The Nets successfully held off the Wizards, due to spectacular play from rookie guard Cam Thomas, in a close 84-81 victory in double overtime.

Thomas has been having a impressive Summer League, including Thursday’s performance which he scored 31 points, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals. He shot 10-for-23 (43.5%) from the field and solidified the win with a clutch one-footed triple.

Chris Duarte, Indiana Pacers

Game Recap: Pacers 97, Trail Blazers 64

Rookie Chris Duarte did it all for the Pacers in a smooth 97-64 win over the Trail Blazers. Duarte finished the game with 19 points, six assists, four steals and four blocks.

The Pacers’ 2021 13th overall pick demonstrated his versatile playmaking and great defensive agility.


Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers

Game Recap: 76ers 96, Hawks 88

The 76ers improved to 2-0 at Summer League by a strong performance from second-year guard Tyrese Maxey. Philadelphia defeated a promising Atlanta Hawks team in a 96-88 overtime victory.

Maxey showed maturity scoring 31 points, grabbing six rebounds, and dishing out five assist. His play was vital in the victory, Maxey being one of three Sixers players to score in double digits.


Jalen Smith, Phoenix Suns

Game Recap: Suns 90, Nuggets 84

The Suns defeated the Nuggets 90-84. The second-year big man out of the University of Maryland came up big for Phoenix in Thursday’s victory, scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to help Phoenix get its first Summer League win, improving to 1-2.

Smith showed his exceptional rebounding ability, but also demonstrated his shooting ability hitting 4-for-7 (57.1%) from beyond the arc.


Jaden McDaniels, Minnesota Timberwolves

Game Recap: Timberwolves 78, Bulls 59

The second-year forward showed up for the Timberwolves in a 78-59 win over the Bulls. He scored 15 points, eight rebounds and added three blocks.

In McDaniels’ rookie season with Minnesota, he made 63 appearances and averaged 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 blocks over 24.0 minutes per game.


Ishmail Wainright, Toronto Raptors

Game Recap: Raptors 92, Rockets 76

Ish Wainright helped the Raptors to a 92-76 victory over the Rockets. Wainright was everywhere, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists. Wainright and teammate Precious Achiuwa combined for 39 points as the Raptors improved to 2-1 in Summer League.

Sam Hauser, Boston Celtics

Game Recap: Celtics 108, Magic 71

The Celtics cruised to a 108-71 victory over the Magic, as Hauser exploded for a team-high 21 points. He was one of five Celtics to score in double digits.

Hauser’s 7-for-12 (58.3%) from the field and 6-for-10 (60%) from beyond the arc helped the Celtics improve to 3-0 in Summer League.
