NYC police investigating rape allegation against Porzingis
NEW YORK (AP) – Kristaps Porzingis’s attorney has confirmed that the NBA star has been accused of rape by a woman. However, he states that the Dallas Mavericks forward “unequivocally” refutes the claim.
On Saturday, Roland Riopelle, a lawyer, stated that the claim against the player was part of an extortion attempt currently under FBI investigation.
On Monday, NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea stated that there is an ongoing investigation into the allegation by the department. However, he did not provide any additional details.
According to unidentified law enforcement officials, various news organizations including the New York Post reported that a woman approached the police on Thursday, alleging that she was raped by Porzingis in his Manhattan apartment last year when he was a player for the Knicks.
Riopelle stated that Porzingis reported to federal law enforcement in December, claiming that the accuser was making “extortionate demands”.
The lawyer also states that the NBA was informed.
In January, the Mavericks traded for Porzingis, a 23-year-old from Latvia.
