SAN JUAN (AP) — Former NBA All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins joined the Guaynabo Mets of Puerto Rico’s professional basketball league on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Guaynabo Mets declared that 32-year-old free agent Cousins still possesses the skills to compete in the NBA. However, he is choosing to take his talents to Puerto Rico, a place known for its passion for basketball. Contract details were not immediately disclosed.

“DeMarcus is among the elite basketball players of his era and considering his talent, he will be one of the best to ever participate in the Puerto Rican league,” said Mets co-owner Marc Grossman. “His shooting ability and capacity to expand the court should blend in perfectly.”

Cousins, who was the fifth overall selection in the 2010 NBA draft, played most recently in the 2021-22 season for the Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks. He also had spells with the Sacramento Kings, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Clippers.

During his NBA career, Cousins, who was a college basketball player at Kentucky, averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

In recent years, several former NBA players have been brought in by Puerto Rico’s league, named Baloncesto Superior Nacional.
