Dennis Smith Jr. leaves game with sprained left ankle
Dallas Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. suffered a sprained left ankle in Thursday’s preseason win against the Atlanta Hawks.
He’s been listed as day-to-day.
“We don’t think it’s serious, and it’s possible that he’ll play tomorrow,” said Mavs coach Rick Carlisle, via the team’s official website. “We’ll see how he feels in the morning.”
The 2017 first-round pick suffered the injury in the second quarter after getting tangled up with Hawks guard Dennis Schroder. He limped to the locker room and would not return.
Smith finished with nine points and three assists in 13 minutes. Through four preseason games, the 19-year-old has averaged 11.5 points, three assists and three rebounds and is considered to be an early favorite to win Kia Rookie of the Year.
The Mavericks are currently short in their backcourt with Seth Curry out indefinitely due to a stress reaction of his left tibia. Second-year guard Yogi Ferrell and reserve Gian Clavell stepped up in Thursday’s 108-94 victory, combining for 30 points (6-11 from 3-point range) and 10 assists.
