Wade's visit brings Anthony back to Madison Square Garden

NEW YORK (AP) — Dwyane Wade considered ending his NBA career after last season. Carmelo Anthony was one of the people who told him he needed a proper goodbye.

Even Anthony returned to Madison Square Garden on Sunday for Wade’s final lap around the league.

Anthony sat courtside at his previous residence to watch Wade assist Miami in defeating the New York Knicks with a score of 106-97.

“Wade said, “I was unaware of his arrival. I discovered it just before the game. It really meant a lot to me. I’m glad.”

During the summer, I had a conversation with him where we discussed my thoughts of retiring. He, Melo, was one of the main people encouraging me not to retire yet. He told me, ‘Flash, you can’t finish like this. You need to go back and experience that final tour kind of love.’ His words played a big role in my decision to return. I’m happy he came to watch me play, possibly for the last time. It was a cool experience.

Anthony was with the Knicks for over six seasons before being traded to Oklahoma City in September 2017. Following a trade from the Houston Rockets to the Chicago Bulls, he is currently a free agent. It is expected that the Bulls will either trade or release the 10-time All-Star.

“I’ve experienced some wonderful years in this building and I eagerly anticipate returning and playing here more.”

When Anthony appeared on the overhead videoboard in the first quarter, he was met with a resounding applause. He expressed to MSG Network the importance of returning to see Wade play, who is slated to have another game in the arena in March.

“This is significant for me because leaving my house to attend an NBA game was a real challenge,” Anthony explained. “However, if there was ever a time to be present, it was to witness him wrapping up here at the Garden. Our bond goes beyond just basketball.”

Anthony maintains the record for scoring 62 points in a single game at the current Garden, one point more than what James Harden managed for Houston in their victory over the Knicks last week. As a New Yorker, Anthony anticipates returning to the arena in a capacity beyond just being a spectator in the future.

“Over the years, I’ve had some fantastic experiences in this building and I’m eager to return and play here again,” said Anthony.
