However, Malone was later overtaken by Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz on March 24, 2001, when he made his 8,532nd free throw in a game against the Washington Wizards.

However, by the time the game resumed, these players had been traded to the opposing teams. This unique event remains the only instance in professional sports history where a player has played for both teams in the same game.
