Julius Randle named Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner for January

This season, Julius Randle assisted young people in the New York area with their literacy campaign.

NEW YORK — The NBA today announced New York Knicks forward Julius Randle as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner for January. Randle is being recognized for his efforts uplifting, encouraging and supporting local youth. Randle will receive the David Robinson trophy and the NBA will donate $10,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Kids.

Randle has committed to donate $500 to the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball School in New York City for each three-pointer he scores this season, as part of his #30 for 3 campaign. This contribution goes towards improving the reading and writing skills of high school students through the school’s literary enhancement program. Randle, who’s having an All-Star season, has already scored 76 three-pointers, raising $38,000 for the school this season alone. Inspired by his support, the New York Knicks and Chase Bank have also contributed to the school and organized special experiences for its students, such as playing at Madison Square Garden, attending a Jr. Knicks clinic at school, and learning about sports careers from Madison Square Garden executives and Knicks front office staff. This program has positively impacted over 300 students. Now in its third season, Randle’s #30 for 3 campaign has raised over $900,000 for the school.

Randle also teamed up with the Hoop Bus to surprise young people across New York City with presents and giveaways for three days in a row. His philanthropic initiative included taking over physical education classes at schools, distributing Wilson basketballs, Sketchers, and other supplies.

“MSK Kids was our choice for the charity donation as we aimed to contribute to children’s cancer research in the city in any way we could,” Randle explained. “Having two sons ourselves, we are passionate about finding cures for childhood diseases. MSK is renowned for their remarkable research into childhood cancer and diseases.”

Randle will be acknowledged as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner in the arena during the pre-game of the Warriors-Knicks game on Feb. 29.
