Legendary Moments In NBA History: Celtics retire McHale's No. 32
Kevin McHale’s superb low-post footwork, shot blocking skills, and clutch scoring established him as a superstar player for the Boston Celtics in the 1980s. His significant contributions to three championship-winning teams in that decade secured his legendary status within the franchise and in NBA history.
On January 30, 1994, the Celtics celebrated the culmination of McHale’s career by retiring his No. 32 jersey. At the time of his retirement, McHale was the fourth highest scorer and the sixth highest rebounder in the Celtics’ history. Moreover, he won the NBA’s Sixth Man Award twice and was a six-time inductee into either the NBA All-Defensive First or Second Team.
During a period when crucial reserves were gaining popularity, McHale stood out as the finest sixth man of his generation. His scoring continuously improved over his initial six seasons, and he earned a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team in the 1980-81 season.
Together with Larry Bird and Robert Parish, he formed what may be considered one of the greatest frontlines ever in NBA history.
