Victor Wembanyama, the forward-center for the San Antonio Spurs, has been awarded the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy as the 2023-24 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year.
Wembanyama was unanimously voted the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year by a media panel, receiving all 99 first-place votes. This makes him the first to achieve this since Karl-Anthony Towns in the 2015-16 season.
Wembanyama is the inaugural French player to receive the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award, annually awarded since the 1952-53 season. He is also the third Spurs player to attain this honor, alongside David Robinson (1989-90) and Tim Duncan (1997-98).
During the 2023-24 regular season, Wembanyama outperformed all other rookies, leading in points (21.4), rebounds (10.6), and blocks (3.6) per game. He also ranked fourth in assists (3.9) and second in steals (1.2) per game. Following Manute Bol in the 1985-86 season, Wembanyama became the second rookie to lead all NBA players in blocks per game in a single season.
Since the recording of blocks began in the 1973-74 season, Wembanyama and Bol are the only two rookies to have ever led the NBA in total blocks for a season.
Wembanyama was the first player to average a minimum of 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in less than 30 minutes per game within a season. Additionally, he was the first to score at least 1,500 points, make 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 3-pointers in a season.
