Victor Wembanyama, a forward-center for the San Antonio Spurs, has been awarded the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy as the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2023-24 season.
Wembanyama was unanimously voted the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year by a media panel, receiving all 99 first-place votes. This makes him the first unanimous recipient of the award since Karl-Anthony Towns in the 2015-16 season.
Wembanyama is the inaugural French player to secure the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award, an annual recognition since the 1952-53 season. He’s the third player from the Spurs to receive the honor, following David Robinson (1989-90) and Tim Duncan (1997-98).
During the regular 2023-24 season, Wembanyama topped the charts among all rookies with average points of 21.4, rebounds of 10.6, and blocks of 3.6 per game. He also secured fourth place in assists with an average of 3.9 and second place in steals with an average of 1.2 per game. He became the second rookie in NBA history, after Manute Bol in 1985-86, to lead all players in blocks per game for a season.
Since the 1973-74 season, when blocks were first recorded, Wembanyama and Bol are the only two rookies to have led the NBA in total blocks for a season.
Wembanyama is the first player to average 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in under 30 minutes per game in a season. Additionally, he is the inaugural player to achieve at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and make 100 3-pointers in a single season.
