Victor Wembanyama, a forward-center for the San Antonio Spurs, has been awarded the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy as the 2023-24 Kia NBA Rookie of the Year.
Wembanyama became the first unanimous Kia NBA Rookie of the Year since Karl-Anthony Towns in the 2015-16 season, having received all 99 first-place votes from a media panel.
Wembanyama has made history as the first French player to receive the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award, an honor annually awarded since the 1952-53 season. Additionally, he is the third player from the Spurs to win the award, following in the footsteps of David Robinson (1989-90) and Tim Duncan (1997-98).
During the 2023-24 regular season, Wembanyama topped the charts among all rookies with an average of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game. He also ranked fourth in assists, averaging 3.9 per game, and second in steals with 1.2 per game. He became the second rookie, after Manute Bol in the 1985-86 season, to lead all NBA players in blocks per game for a season.
Since blocks were first recorded in the 1973-74 NBA season, Wembanyama and Bol are the only two rookies to have led the league in total blocks for a season.
Wembanyama was the first player to average a minimum of 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks in less than 30 minutes per game within a season. Additionally, he is the inaugural player to accumulate at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 successful 3-pointers in a single season.
