Legendary Moments in NBA History: Allen Iverson scores 54 points vs. Cavaliers in 2001
The 2000-01 season was a watershed one for the Philadelphia 76ers and their star guard Allen Iverson. Behind the play of Iverson — that season’s NBA MVP — the Sixers reached the NBA Finals for the first time since 1983. En route to that achievement, Iverson put on a scoring showcase all season long, with one of his best games of the season coming on Jan. 6, 2001.
That night, against the Cavaliers, Iverson dropped 54 points in Cleveland to power a 107-104 victory. He had 15 points in the first quarter, 13 in the second quarter, 16 more in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth quarter to get to 51. This was the third 50-point game in his career, one in which he would log eight more 50-point games to reach 11 in his career.
Iverson was coming off a 41-point performance against Seattle when he broke his own Gund Arena record of 50 points. His 50-point outburst was one of two 50-point games that season, as Iverson logged 51 points 15 days later in a loss to the Toronto Raptors.
