The 2024 Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia saw a record number of 72 players from 21 different U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
The annual August Fantasy Camp is eagerly awaited by players and the Flyers Alumni alike, as it is one of the most exciting events of the year. This year’s camp held a special significance, as it marked the 10th anniversary celebrations, which were held both on and off the ice from Friday to Monday.
Kudos to Steve Capoferri and the River Rock Academy team on clinching their sixth Fantasy Cup championship. They triumphed over Team Toyota with a 7-1 score in the final match. In the consolation game, Team Results Guaranteed secured a 10-3 victory over Team Neumann University.
Zach “Gunner” Stahl, the forward from Results Guaranteed, was the top scorer in the tournament with 17 points from four games (11 goals, 6 assists). John Romano, the center from Big River Rock, came in second with 12 points (9 goals, 3 assists).
Four teams were coached by twelve alumni of the Flyers.
Results Guaranteed (white jerseys): Danny Briere, Brad Marsh, Dave Poulin
Toyota (green jerseys): Andre Dupont, John LeClair, Patrick Sharp
Neumann (black jerseys): Ian Laperriere, Keith Jones, Joe Watson
River Rock (orange jerseys): Mark Howe, Mark Recchi, Paul Holmgren
Only half the fun at camp comes from the on-ice sessions — each includes one practice, three round-robin games, and the consolation and championship matches.
Every year, a welcoming reception is held on the opening night where all the players get introduced by the legendary Flyers public address announcer, Lou Nolan, who also performs PA duties during the games at the Class of 1923 Arena. This year, the event featured coaches Joe Watson, Dupont, and Kelly reminiscing about the Flyers’ 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup championship seasons, under the moderation of emcee Steve Coates.
A camp outing to an undisclosed “mystery” location takes place every Saturday. This year, the Saturday excursion involved a picturesque dinner at a rowing club on Boathouse Row.
Every Sunday, the final night of camp, “Coatesy” always leads a Hot Stove session with a few special guest speakers from the Flyers/NHL Alumni. This year, for the camp’s 10th Anniversary, Alumni President Marsh, along with camp organizers Kelly and Rob Baer, really pulled out all the stops. They organized an exceptional experience where camp participants were guided to the Wells Fargo Center, traversed the lit path that the Flyers players use for home games, and explored the newly renovated locker rooms.
Everyone then moved on to enjoy dinner at the opulent Adrian restaurant owned by Stephen Starr. This was followed by a question and answer session, hosted by Steve Coates, with panelists Sharp, Holmgren, LeClair and Recchi. The session was a free-for-all, with questions varying from handling a trade to parenting a young athlete or a non-athlete with a well-known surname. LeClair and Recchi gave heartfelt responses to the latter subject. The recurring advice was to be as supportive as possible and encourage their children to chase their interests, skills, and dreams.
This year’s Camp highlighted a silent auction of distinctive Alumni memorabilia. All proceeds were directed towards supporting diverse Flyers Alumni programs and initiatives, including their annual “Twelve Days of Christmas” charitable giving program during the holiday season.
Before returning to the camp hotel on Sunday, Marsh provided Fantasy Camp attendees with a sneak peek of the new events the Alumni are planning to introduce over the coming year. In 2025, an “Alumni Weekend” is planned, featuring three fundraising events spread over three days: a pickleball tournament in Malvern, a Walk, Run, or Bicycle event in Conshohocken (akin to the old Charity Classic format), and the 2025 Alumni Golf Invitational at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington. Additionally, during the NHL off-season, the Flyers Alumni will organize an exclusive golfing vacation trip to Ireland.
