Tortorella, Quinn added to U.S. coaching staff for 2025 4 Nations Face-Off

Join Hynes as assistants to Sullivan at the tournament.

The United States has added John Tortorella and David Quinn as assistant coaches for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

They become part of coach Mike Sullivan’s staff, along with John Hynes.

Minnesota Wild general manager, Bill Guerin, who also serves as the U.S. GM for the 4 Nations Face-Off, expressed his excitement for their coaching team. “We have an extremely skilled coaching staff leading our team. Their individual and collective experiences will significantly benefit our country as we aim to clinch a championship in February,” said Guerin.

The first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off tournament will exclusively feature NHL players from the U.S., Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The tournament, which is a best-on-best format, will take place from February 12 to 20. During this nine-day period, seven games will be played at TD Garden in Boston and Bell Centre in Montreal.

Going into his third season as coach for the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella ranks ninth in NHL history with 742 wins and eighth with 1,512 games across 22 seasons. His career spans coaching for the Flyers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers. In 2004, Tortorella clinched the Stanley Cup with the Lightning and has been awarded the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL Coach of the Year twice (2004, 2017).

The individual, who is 66 years old, served as a coach for the U.S. in the 2008 IIHF World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. They also assisted in the 2005 World Championship.

For six seasons with the Lightning, Rangers, and Canucks, Sullivan served as an assistant under Tortorella.

Quinn is embarking on his inaugural season as Sullivan’s assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Previously, he was dismissed as the coach of the San Jose Sharks on April 24, following a record of 41-98-25 over two seasons. In addition, Quinn spent three seasons coaching the Rangers and holds a career record of 137-185-50.

The individual, who is 58 years old, served as a coach for the U.S. team during the 2022 Beijing Olympics and the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. Additionally, he assisted the U.S. team thrice at the World Championships in 2007, 2012, and 2016.

Sullivan, who is entering his 10th season as coach of the Penguins, was appointed as U.S. coach for the 4 Nations Face-Off on May 18. Hynes, who is starting his second season as the Wild’s coach, was included as an assistant on June 11.

Forwards Jack Eichel (Vegas Golden Knights), Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers), and defensemen Adam Fox (New York Rangers), Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks) and Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) were the first six players named to the U.S. roster, on June 28. The remainder of the roster, which will consist of 23 NHL players (20 skaters, three goalies) will be named later this year.
