John Tortorella Named Assistant Coach for Team USA at 4 Nations Face Off

The Flyers’ head coach is one of four coaches named to the Team USA coaching roster.

Today, USA Hockey revealed that John Tortorella, the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, has been appointed as the assistant coach of Team USA for the National Hockey League’s 4-Nations Face-Off. The tournament is scheduled to occur in Montreal and Boston from February 12th through the 20th.

The February 4-Nations Face-Off will be the fifth time Tortorella has served as a coach for USA Hockey.

As the 2024-25 season begins, Tortorella ranks ninth in the all-time NHL coach wins and stands second amongst American-born coaches. His most recent position was the head coach for Team USA at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey under the banner of USA Hockey. His past experience includes working as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Ice Hockey Team at the 2010 Olympics where they clinched a silver medal. He led the U.S. Men’s National Team as the head coach at the 2008 IIHF Men’s World Championship and served as the associate coach for the U.S. team at the 2005 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

In his two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Tortorella has achieved a coaching record of 69-71-24. He surpassed Darryl Sutter on the NHL’s all-time wins list, ranking ninth with 738 victories, during a game against San Jose on March 12, 2023. Additionally, Tortorella marked his 1500th game as an NHL head coach on Dec. 29, 2023, in Seattle, which made him the eighth all-time, third currently active, and the first U.S.-born head coach in the history of NHL.

The Boston, Massachusetts native, who has won 742 games in his 22-season NHL career, guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to their first Stanley Cup in the history of the franchise in 2004. Tortorella currently sits third among active NHL coaches in terms of games coached (1547) and fourth in wins (742). He is ranked eighth in the history of the NHL for games coached and ninth for wins.
