Oliver Ekman-Larsson returned to his native Sweden a Stanley Cup champion Thursday when the 33-year-old defenseman took in the emotions of showing off hockey’s greatest prize for the first time in his 14-season NHL career.
“Simultaneously, it feels both unreal and real,” said Ekman-Larsson from Dackehallen, a rink located in Tingsryd. “The emotions and time invested here, plus the support shown by everyone who comes here, is overwhelming. Of course, some people are here for the trophy too, showing interest in it, but I’m extremely grateful.”
Ekman-Larsson’s subsequent action involved spending time with his loved ones. This included a visit to the cemetery with the Cup to pay homage to his mother, Annika, who succumbed to breast and lung cancer in 2017.
“He said, “that’s something that ranks high on the list.”

After having the last four years of his contract bought out by the Vancouver Canucks, Ekman-Larsson inked a one-year deal with the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2023. His performance in the season, with 32 points from 80 games and an additional six points from 24 Stanley Cup Playoff games, contributed significantly to both Ekman-Larsson and the Panthers securing their first-ever Cup victory. Ekman-Larsson also joined the ranks of one of eight defensemen in NHL history to win their initial NHL championship after participating in a minimum of 980 regular-season games, with him clocking in 982 games.
“From quite early on, I felt that Florida was a viable option,” stated Ekman-Larsson in an on-ice interview at Dackehallen. “They made it to the Stanley Cup Final the previous year, which indicated to me that they had the necessary experience and players. In hindsight, it turned out to be an excellent decision. It’s easy to say that now, but that’s where we stand,” he added.
On July 1, Ekman-Larsson inked a four-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, valued at $14 million, with an average annual value of $3.5 million.

“He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It’s going to be an exciting ride, from the triumph of victory to the chance to shape the future. This is also a part of settling down. When Toronto approached us, it sparked an extra thrill in our hearts. We’re eagerly looking forward to kicking off the new season there and anticipate much enjoyment. The organization is rich in history and culture.”
