Red Wings release 2024 NHL prospect games roster and schedule

The 24-man roster is headlined by first-round pair Danielson and Brandsegg-Nygård.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today released their 2024 NHL Prospect Games roster and a complete schedule for the two-day event, held on Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15 at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, Mich. The team consists of 24 recent draft picks, free agent signees and tryouts who will battle against prospects from the Dallas Stars.

The Red Wings’ team includes two notable first-round selections from the last two NHL Entry Drafts: Nate Danielson, a center who was the 9th overall pick in 2023, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, a right wing who was 15th overall in 2024. In the 2023-24 season, Danielson played for both the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey League, scoring 67 points in 54 regular games. He also achieved 24 points in 18 playoff matches and was instrumental in the Winterhawks reaching the WHL Championship Series. Danielson later debuted professionally with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, participating in two Calder Cup Playoff games.

Brandsegg-Nygård, on the other hand, played most of the 2023-24 season with Mora IK in Sweden’s second-tier professional league, amassing 18 points in 41 regular games. He also contributed 10 points in 12 playoff games, helping his team reach the Semifinals for the second year in a row. Additionally, he scored 12 points in seven games with Mora IK’s under-20 team in Sweden’s premier junior league. Born in Oslo, Norway, Brandsegg-Nygård became the first Norwegian player to be selected in the first round of an NHL Entry Draft.

The roster also boasts notable players such as defenseman Shai Buium, who was the 36th pick in the 2021 draft. Buium helped the University of Denver secure their second NCAA Division I National Championship in three seasons with his impressive stats of 36 points (7-29-36), a plus-33 rating, and 14 penalty minutes in 43 games.

Center Emmitt Finnie, who was the 201st pick in the 2023 draft, led the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers with 59 points (19-40-59) in 62 games before making his professional debut with the Griffins.

The 80th pick in the 2024 draft, center Ondřej Becher, had an outstanding season with the WHL’s Prince George Cougars, scoring 96 points (32-64-96), a plus-38 rating, and 48 penalty minutes in 58 games. He also added 19 points (5-14-19) in 15 postseason games.

Right wing Jakub Rychlovský signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Red Wings on June 3. He led Czechia’s top professional league with 26 goals during the 2023-24 season.

The roster comprises of 24 players, among which seven are former Red Wings draft picks. These include two first-round picks, one second-round, one third-round, one fourth-round, and two seventh-round picks. The ages of these drafted prospects vary from 18 to 23 years. The youngest ones are Brandsegg-Nygård and Landon Miller, who were chosen in the most recent 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The oldest is Carter Gylander, a 2019 seventh-round pick with a 14-14-4 record, a 2.93 goals-against average, and a 0.901 save percentage in 32 games at Colgate University last season.

In the history of Centre ICE Arena prospect action, 772 players have advanced to play in at least one NHL game. This includes 13 players who played for the Red Wings in the 2023-24 season: Jonatan Berggren, Ben Chiarot from Atlanta, Alex DeBrincat from Chicago, Simon Edvinsson, Robby Fabbri from St. Louis, Ville Husso from St. Louis, Klim Kostin from St. Louis, Dylan Larkin, Michael Rasmussen, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Joe Veleno, and Jake Walman from St. Louis.
