Torey Krug will not play this season for the St. Louis Blues because of an ankle injury that will require surgery.
Earlier, the defenseman was diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle due to a bone fracture he suffered earlier in his NHL career. In July, the Blues announced that Krug would undergo rehabilitation for the next 6-8 weeks before reassessment to decide if surgery is necessary.
Last season, the 33-year-old accrued 39 points, comprising of four goals and 35 assists, in 77 games for the Blues. This marked his fourth season with the team, following his signing of a seven-year contract worth $45.5 million ($6.5 million average annual value) on October 9, 2020.
Last offseason, Krug suffered a foot injury and had missed several games due to different injuries in each of his initial three seasons with the Blues. However, in September 2023, he stated that he had refused to waive his no-trade clause.
“He said, ‘I’ve chosen to stay here. I aspire to be a part of this room, adore playing for this city, and take pride in wearing the Bluenote. This excites me greatly… I have a family and kids, many considerations, but ultimately, just as I mentioned earlier, I desire to be here and represent the Note. We’ve got a fantastic locker room atmosphere here, and the vibes this year are positive. I believe we can quickly turn things around.'”
The Boston Bruins signed Krug as an undrafted free agent on March 25, 2012. Since then, he has scored 483 points (89 goals, 394 assists) in 778 regular-season games and 57 points (11 goals, 46 assists) in 82 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The Blues, who begin the regular season at the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 8, signed defensemen Ryan Suter and Pierre-Olivier Joseph to one-year contracts this offseason.
