With new contract signed, Veleno brings extra motivation into 2024-25 season
Excited forward looks forward to future with Red Wings after signing two-year deal.
DETROIT — Coming off his most productive NHL season in 2023-24, Joe Veleno has plenty of on-ice and off-ice growth to reflect on this summer.
Veleno, after renewing his two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 20, stated that he aims to achieve much more starting from this season.
“It’s nice to have a deal done,” Veleno recently told DetroitRedWings.com. “I don’t think anyone looks to go to arbitration, so I’m really happy we came to an agreement. This gives me another two years with Detroit. I want to be here and stay here. I don’t envision myself anywhere else.”
The 24-year-old forward, Veleno, who was selected as the 30th overall pick by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, achieved NHL career-highs last season with 12 goals, 16 assists, and 28 points in 80 games. In addition to his scoring prowess, Veleno demonstrated his versatility for Detroit by fitting into a top-six role and making significant contributions to both special teams units when needed by the coaches.

“Veleno’s ability to play both on the wing and center has greatly contributed to our depth and competitiveness throughout the year,” said Derek Lalonde, head coach of Red Wings, on March 5. “In today’s NHL, I believe this is extremely valuable.”
Veleno feels that his second full season with the Red Wings helped him become a more well-rounded player.
“Numerically, I made significant progress in the right direction. However, I also had to familiarize myself with new tasks in my role,” said Veleno. “Gaining that experience was incredibly valuable and I’m genuinely thankful for the opportunities I’ve been presented with. Ultimately, it’s my responsibility to seize those opportunities.”
Veleno stated that his self-confidence and self-awareness have been beneficial in his career, and he doesn’t intend to change his mentality with this new deal.
“Securing a multi-year contract brings a sense of comfort, but I’m now focused on progressing,” said Veleno. “My goal is to continually work hard, self-improve as a player, and stay engaged within the community. We have a promising future here and I intend to contribute to that, enhance my skills as a player, and facilitate the team’s future progress.”

Last season, Veleno relished aiding Detroit in their push for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He highlighted that the level of competitiveness he experienced during this period was unparalleled in his prior NHL experiences.
“Recalling the feeling of being so close, we all understand that reaching the playoffs is a goal we can achieve,” said Veleno. “The end of last season was met with a great deal of disappointment in the locker room.”
Veleno stated that he is working to enhance every aspect of his game while training in his hometown Montreal this offseason.
“Working out in the gym and doing a bit of skating is what I’ve been up to,” said Veleno. “As we get deeper into summer, my training sessions are becoming increasingly demanding. The gym and ice training are picking up pace, but I’m quite pleased with the progress so far. In addition, I’ve managed to enjoy the pleasant weather and spend quality time with my loved ones.”
Veleno expressed his excitement about meeting the new additions to the Red Wings this fall. He said this would happen when the team gathers at the Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich. for their Training Camp.
Veleno expressed his anticipation for meeting the new team members, as well as reconnecting with those from the previous year. He is eager to return to the ice, and senses a shared excitement among his teammates. He believes that the fans should also be looking forward to the upcoming season, given the consistent progress the team has made each year.
