The Semifinals of Copa America 2024 have arrived with the first match tonight featuring a rematch from the Group Stage. Argentina and Canada, both victors in the Quarterfinals from Group A, are set to face off with a place in the Title match hanging in the balance. In their first encounter at the start of the Copa America 2024 tournament, Argentina triumphed over Canada with a 2-0 win, although Canada showed resilience in the initial 45 minutes.

After winning their next two, Canada held on against Group B Winner, Venezuela, in the Quarterfinals, advancing on penalty kicks. Argentina has handled business in all 4 of their matches, and I don’t necessarily see that changing tonight. Congrats to Canada for making it here, but they are the clear outlier left in this Copa America, and I see it ending tonight.

Argentina Faces a Familiar Foe in the Semifinals

In this Copa America, Emiliano Martinez has only conceded one goal in four matches.

As I mentioned earlier, these teams started competing in the Copa America tournament, and Argentina triumphed with a 2-0 win, thanks to two goals in the second half. Even though Argentina hasn’t been decisively defeating teams with 3-4 goals, they have consistently played well and managed to secure a victory in each game, or progress to the Quarterfinals.

What has impressed me the most is their defense. In this tournament, Argentina has allowed only 8 shots on target and 12 corner kicks in 4 matches. They are denying their opponents any opportunities to score, which makes Emi Martinez’s job significantly easier. I believe that if they maintain their strong defensive play, they have a good chance of winning the entire tournament. Regardless, I don’t anticipate them facing any significant challenges in tonight’s game.

Despite Canada’s survival in the knockout round with two match wins, their offensive production has been poor. They recorded only 7 shots on target during their three group-stage matches, even with a man advantage in two of those games for over an hour. Canada did rally with 7 SOT against Venezuela, but only managed to score one goal. If Canada cannot improve their offense, their progression will be hindered.

The Copa America Tournament won’t be having any additional time, with games resulting in a tie proceeding directly to penalty kicks post the 90-minute mark. Canada managed to stand their ground for 45 minutes in their initial match against Argentina, but I doubt they can repeat that performance. In my opinion, Canada must secure at least one goal to progress, as they are likely to concede easily. If the scoring remains low, as I anticipate, Canada should aim for a goalless 90-minute game and try to clinch a victory through penalties.

Copa America 2024: Argentina vs Canada Best Bets

For those who are new, let me clarify this. We are wagering that Argentina will be ahead at halftime and will ultimately win the match within 90 minutes. Both conditions need to be met for us to win. The events within each 45-minute half are unpredictable, but as long as Argentina is in the lead when the teams retreat to the locker room both times, we’re good.

Despite our prediction of less than three goals in the initial match due to an assumed slow start, I believe tonight’s game will be a different story. Argentina is well aware that failing to overcome Canada tonight would mean their tournament run was unsuccessful. Given their previous 2-0 victory over Canada in the group stage, they should not be taking any chances. I predict they will take an aggressive approach, launching an early offensive onslaught and persistently targeting the goal. I envision them securing an early 1-0 lead and maintaining it till the end.

I can envision a final score of 1-0 or 2-0, hence my support for Argentina to Nil at (-110). On a personal note, I’ll support the Argentinians as I expect them to demonstrate extreme aggression and control the game for all 90 minutes.
