Orioles vs Mets: MLB Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (8/20)

Today, Citi Field is the battleground for game 2 of a 3 game series between two teams. The Mets, who already triumphed over the Orioles in game 1 with a 4-3 victory last night, are the hosts. In the AL East, Baltimore is currently in a struggle with the other New York team, trailing by 0.5 game in the standings. This places them 2.5 games ahead of the Twins and Royals for the top Wild Card spot. However, the Orioles are undoubtedly aiming for an AL East Title.

The Mets, trailing the Phillies by 8.5 games, are only a game and a half away from second place in the NL East. They’re in a tough competition with the Braves, who currently occupy the final Wild Card spot in the National League. However, the Braves face a challenging week ahead as they play against the Phillies. Understanding the need to accumulate wins to secure a playoff spot, the Mets see tonight’s home game as an ideal opportunity to close the gap.

Jose Quintana is on the mound for New York, and his home game stats have greatly improved this season. However, his recent performances have been less than stellar. On the Orioles’ side, Dean Kremer is the chosen pitcher. Despite showing better stats on the road, he’s also been struggling in recent starts. Will one of these pitchers be able to steer their respective team to a win tonight? Alternatively, will the game’s outcome depend on the hitters?

Baltimore Orioles vs New York Mets: Playoff Races Heating Up

Tonight, Dean Kremer will be on the mound at Citi Field.

Will Quintana Bounce Back at Home?

Is it possible for the left-handed Quintana to quiet the Orioles’ hitters?

Jose Quintana has seen his ERA decrease by half a run to 3.72 in home games this season. However, his recent performances have been disappointing. In his last three starts, Quintana has a record of 0-2 with a 6.89 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP, conceding 3 or more runs in each game. In his last three appearances at Citi Field, he has allowed 4 or more runs in two games. Baltimore, known for its ability to hit left-handed pitchers, is eager to face him.

The Orioles have a batting average of .259 against left-handed pitchers and have improved slightly to .263 post the All-Star Break. Even with Kremer pitching, I anticipate the Orioles scoring runs in this game. Although they lack top-tier hitters today, batters-box.com (Remember the Hyphen) reports that they have four players with a high or above average rating. The team must improve their performance to compete with the Yankees, and giving their pitcher strong run support is crucial.

Dean Kremer recently secured a win, however, this was after suffering four consecutive losses. In his last seven games, he has a record of 1-5, allowing 21 runs for a 5.38 ERA since July 9th. His WHIP has also increased to 1.59 in the past month. In short, his performance has been subpar. Kremer has conceded 3 or more earned runs in his last three road starts, which could potentially be exploited by the Mets. The Mets have been successful in four out of their last six games, conceding only 16 runs in those games. However, their performance varies and may not necessarily aid their cause.

The Mets have a team batting average of .250, dropping slightly to .246 against right-handed pitchers, and further to .236 when playing at home. Their batting average for August is .252. However, I believe they will need to score significantly to secure a victory against the Orioles tonight.

This isn’t ideal, and we’re taking a hit for this stance, but I believe the Orioles can score 4 runs today. They’d definitely prefer to play against a left-handed pitcher, and given Quintana’s recent struggles, it’s a great opportunity for them to step up their game. Baltimore is aware that the Yankees are up against a challenging series with the Guardians, making progress in this series extremely beneficial, particularly since the Orioles will be playing against the Astros and Dodgers after this Mets series.

In the end, I’m rooting for the Orioles to unite and amass some runs to back Kremer. I believe they can surpass the score set by Quintana, but their F5 TT Over 1.5 (-165) was too tempting even for me. Instead, I’ll support them to score 4 across all 9 innings. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait until the last inning to win!
