Orioles vs Mets Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/21)
Following their defeat in the series opener, the Orioles made a comeback, triumphing over the Mets with a 9-5 score on Tuesday. Baltimore’s right-handed pitcher, Dean Kremer, contributed to the victory by striking out seven players, marking his sixth win in 2024. Additionally, right fielder Anthony Santander spearheaded the offensive action, hitting his 37th home run of the year.
It remains to be seen if Baltimore’s recent win will kick-start a positive streak. The Orioles have had a middling August performance, with a straight-up (SU) record of 9-9 and only one back-to-back win in the past 10 days. Their road game performance has also been less than stellar, with a dismal 7-9 SU record in their last nine away games.
Conversely, the Mets are far from their top form at the moment. They’ve suffered losses in seven of their last 11 games. A significant factor contributing to this lack of success is the team’s average of merely 3.8 runs per game during this period. This level of performance is unlikely to suffice against the O’s, who are ranked third in Major League Baseball for scoring the most runs per game.
That being said, Citi Field has not been hospitable to the visitors. The Orioles had suffered four successive losses in Queens prior to their victory last night, leaving it to time to determine whether it was a one-off event or not.
Will the Orioles experience more rare success in Queens?
Everyone will be watching Orioles LHP Cole Irvin closely, as he is set to make his first start since June 30. Irvin, a fifth-round pick from 2016, was transferred to the bullpen in July where he performed disappointingly, recording a 9.00 ERA. He conceded 14 earned runs and four home runs from 21 hits in just 14 innings.
Furthermore, in seven inter-league appearances this season, which includes three starts, Irvin has a 2-2 record and a 5.14 ERA.
Regarding the Mets, the recent performances of RHP Sean Manaea have been inconsistent at best. He has let in six runs across 10 innings in his latest two starts, leading to a 5.40 ERA. However, the native of Valparaiso, IN, has a 5-0 record and a 2.03 ERA in his previous five home games, demonstrating the significant advantage he gains from the support of the Citi Field audience.
Can the Mets take advantage of Orioles LHP Cole Irvin’s struggles?
In a game that could go in either direction, I predict we’ll see a Mets victory today. Again, the Orioles have struggled to string together consecutive wins in recent weeks and Irvin’s play on the mound can’t be trusted. The Mets’ batters are talented enough to take advantage of the situation and another strong showing from Manaea will only seal the deal.
With that in mind, backing the Over on the 8-run total is the way to go. The Over is 12-6 in the Mets’ last 18 home games as well as 15-5 in the Orioles’ 20 previous road outings. Furthermore, Baltimore and New York have surpassed their projected total in 11 of the last 14 meetings, averaging a combined 11.5 runs per game.
Given that the two teams scored a total of 14 runs on Tuesday, it’s likely that we’ll witness a lot of offensive action this afternoon.
