Tottenham vs Arsenal: EPL Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (9/15)

Amidst all the NFL Sunday action, we also have an exciting match on the pitch in England, as Tottenham and Arsenal face off in the North London Derby. The Gunners are 2-1-0 with 7 points to start their English Premier League campaign, while Tottenham sits in 12th place at 1-1-1. The Spurs tied Leicester to start their season, then routed Everton at home, winning 4-nil. Last time out, they fell to Newcastle on the road, 2-1, bringing us to the match where they host Arsenal.

Arsenal is unbeaten through 3 EPL matches, beating Wolverhampton at home, Villa on the road, and playing Brighton to a 1-1 draw last time out. This will arguably be their toughest opponent so far this EPL season, and they have more on their plate this week as well. The UEFA Champions League kicks off this week, and Arsenal will travel to Italy to take on Atalanta on Thursday. With that in mind, I could potentially see the Gunners giving some players a break, after several were still playing in the UEFA Nations League the past two weeks.

As for Tottenham, they also have a cup game this week, but it is an early stage Carabao Cup match against Coventry City. The Spurs will be much more worried about hosting Arsenal in the EPL rather than traveling to face a League Championship team early in a tournament. Will this translate? And could Tottenham pull off this upset at home? Or will Arsenal come focused and remain unbeaten in EPL competition?

Will Gunners Bring Their A-Game with UCL Beginning?

Saka and Arsenal take on Tottenham on the road on Sunday

Look, Arsenal has set themselves up for success in the EPL already. Sure, they would like to have 9 points, but unbeaten with a win over Villa puts the rest of your campaign in great shape. I understand this is a huge match in the EPL, as Tottenham will certainly be a Top 8, maybe Top 6 team in the league, but Arsenal could get caught looking ahead. Arsenal not only plays Tottenham on the road on Sunday, they play Atalanta in Italy in the Champions League on Thursday, and then turn around the play Manchester City on the road next Sunday. It is a very, very tough stretch of games for the Gunners.

Add in the fact that plenty of their top players just played a couple of international matches, they may need a break, and this would be the game to do it. Do I think Arsenal folds over and hands Tottenham the win? Absolutely not, however I could see guys like Ødegaard and Saka either sitting out completely, or playing minimal minutes in this first match.

Now, Arsenal has plenty of other weapons, so they certainly shouldn’t be counted out completely, but they did have several starters who could benefit from taking a match off. Again, that won’t be Thursday, or next Sunday against Manchester City. As for the Spurs, they allowed a 78th minute winner from Newcastle on the road last time out. They certainly had less players active during the international break, so a majority of the squad should be primed and ready to go on Sunday.

Tottenham has not beaten Arsenal in the EPL since 2022. Last year, they drew 2-2 in September, with Arsenal winning 3-2 on the road back in April. The year prior to that, Arsenal won 3-1 at home and 2-0 on the road. They’ve gotten the better of their rival in 3 of the past 4 matches, but things change this Sunday.

I’ll admit I have little faith in Tottenham to actually win this game, but for plus money at home in a rivalry match, give it to me all day. As I mentioned, not only are the Gunners’ legs much more depleted following the international “break”, they also have two more tough matches this week that are probably slightly more important. This is simply a badly timed game for the Gunners, and I think in order to do what’s best for their long term season, they will need to rest some stars.

Now, we won’t get the exact lineups until right before the match, but I expect +122 to disappear very quickly if certain Arsenal players are on the bench to start. This is the perfect opportunity for Tottenham to sneak away with 3 points in a rivalry match. While I do think this game ends in a draw, I’ll back a motivated Spurs team at plus money in this situation. Don’t worry, we sprinkled on the draw at (+267) as well.
