This evening’s game represents the eighth face-off of the 2024 season between the Yankees and the Rays. Following Tuesday’s game, the Yankees’ lead in the series has decreased to 4-3 with six more games remaining.

Despite the Yankees having a minor advantage over the Rays this year, lately it has been challenging to maintain confidence in them. The New York team began the season with a 50-22 record, but have since lost 16 of their last 21 games — six of these losses being from the last seven games. Additionally, during this period, the team experienced five separate losing streaks of multiple games.

The Yankees are struggling with their batting, which isn’t producing as expected. Since June 15, their performance has been poor with a .223/.315/.379 slash line, compared to their season’s average of .248/.329/.426. Also, they have been among the teams with the least runs, ranking 14th from the bottom during this period. Furthermore, they have scored three or fewer runs in seven of their last 12 games.

The Yankees’ bats must be more consistent if they hope to beat the Rays today.

Only time will reveal if the Rays’ recent victory was just a stroke of luck. They did, after all, suffer a series of defeats at the hands of the Texas Rangers, losing 20-5 in total. The Yankees hope that RHP Marcus Stroman can overcome his recent struggles. The seasoned right-handed pitcher has been underperforming on the mound. Over his last four starts, Stroman has racked up a 6.43 ERA, having given up 15 earned runs on 20 hits along with 11 walks over a span of 21 innings.

Simultaneously, it will be intriguing to observe which form of Zach Eflin shows up. The Rays RHP has an impressive record of 3-0 with a 1.15 ERA in his previous five away starts. However, Eflin also gave up five earned runs on seven hits in five innings during his last start on Independence Day.

I also recommend backing the Over on the 8-run total. Of this season’s seven Yankees-Rays tilts thus far, five of those finished with at least eight total runs. The Overa is also 8-1 in New York’s last nine road games as well as 7-3 in its 10 previous AL East tilts.
